Water for all

Access to water for the village

According to United Nations Human Development Report, more than 2.5 billion people have no access to a decent restroom. Thus, one billion drink and cook with water contaminated by feces. Every year, 1.8 million children die due to diarrhea (4900 daily) and other diseases related to polluted water.

Garifuna village of Triunfo de la Cruz (11 000 people) do not have access to running water. There is no sewers and toilets are equipped with septic tanks. To drink or cook, the villagers draw water from wells that reach groundwater in their territory.

The water has reached alarming degree of contamination (see report water analysis we have done).

Health center in the village was so far applied for various bacterial infections like diarrhea (some fatal) especially for children. Recently, the problem is compounded by identifying cases of legionellosis and typhoid and other deadly infections due to this water pollution.

The village is bordered to the north by the Caribbean Sea and to the south by a mountain chain which contains sources of pure water without contamination. We conducted analyzes within 3 km from the comunity.

The solution is simply to create a system of filters and tanks and route the water to the village. A Quebec company has offered to come and deliver its knowledge and expertise to the project.

Garif'Onda and leaders of Triunfo de la Cruz (Miguel Martinez), undertook various events to raise funds. However, the project has only 22% of funds.

On behalf of Triunfo de la Cruz, Garif'Onda publishes this request for assistance with your clicks.

Sincere thanks to you for your generosity are addressed by:

- The village chief, Miguel Angel MARTINEZ.

- All the village council.

- The Committee of access to water that was created at that time and which is chaired by Mario FICO.

- And the village of Triunfo de la Cruz.

(A petition from the village, which was presented to the government, unanswered, is also available).
